Original 1870s-era stereoview: the Richelieu & Ontario Navigation Company's sidewheel steamer CORINTHIAN — her name boldly lettered on the paddlewheel housing — running the rapids of the St. Lawrence River.
Shooting the Lachine Rapids was the signature thrill of the Montreal–Lake Ontario route: R&O sidewheelers carried passengers straight through the whitewater, and views of the boats mid-rapids were among the most dramatic tourist images of the era. Heavy whitewater fills the foreground; the Corinthian's twin stacks and tiered passenger decks ride above it, paddlewheel housing clearly named.
