Description

Original Civil War soldier’s letter, dated October 21, 1862, written by Otis Currier while confined at the General Hospital, Captain’s House, Capitol Hill, Washington, D.C. Paper measures approx. 7.75\" x 5.25\".

Currier writes to his friend Adelia, reporting both on his health and his regiment’s brutal experiences in battle:

He recounts fighting connected with Bull Run and Virginia campaigns, noting how heavily his regiment suffered.

Describes that they went into battle with 600 men and came out with 150, then lost another 139 in subsequent fighting.

Reflects on having been in 8 severe engagements and now being laid up in hospital, “pretty sick.”

Mentions General Burnside’s command and gives vivid remarks about Rebel forces being nearly equal in strength to the Union.

Observes that Union soldiers stood “as bold as Lyons and repulsed the Rebels.”

Provides commentary on Washington City compared with smaller towns, showing the soldier’s impressions while recovering.

Letter is fully signed: “Otis Currier, Captain’s Hospital, Capitol Hill, Washington DC.”

This is an outstanding firsthand account of the Civil War, mixing personal health struggles, battlefield statistics, and reflections on Bull Run and the Burnside campaigns. The named soldier, full hospital location, and specific casualty figures make this a highly desirable piece for collectors of Civil War correspondence.

Authentic period piece related to family, historyor local heritage - well-suited for historical collections, genealogical /genealogy research, or museum acquisition.Vintage or Antique.
