GRAND TRUNK WESTERN 5629 ALCO LOCOMOTIVE SERIGRAPH 1974 For Sale

Grand Trunk Western #5629; serigraph; unknown artist; signed and dated pencil LR. Sheet 11 x 14\", image 10 x 7\". Image in very fine condition, the heavily inked colors are still very bright and vivid. Some sunning/toning to sheet. Printed on gray cotton rag paper. Unframed. Includes a two page description by the artist of his discovery of the 5629 sitting on a rail siding in snowy Chicago. The story of the 5629 - built by ALCO in 1924 - is the stuff of legend in railroad circles. Bought by bread salesman Richard Jensen from GTW in 1959, Jensen envisioned running steam train excursions out of Chicago. After much volunteer labor to get the train (and other engines he had purchased) running, Jensen ran excursion trips from 1967-69, in addition to pulling the Circus World Museum Schlitz Circus Train in 1968. Eventually running into financial problems, the 5629 was left sitting for years on Rock Island RR tracks in Chicago that were eventually bought by Chicago Metra. After much legal wrangling between Jensen (now in ill health) and Metra, the GTW 5629 was sadly (and incredibly) scrapped in 1989. There are several websites that give much detail, along with pictures, of this sad tale. I have researched for a couple months and have not found another art print of this iconic engine. How ironic that the artist, in his description of how he first saw the impressive snow covered 5629 in 1974 and was motivated to create this striking image in 1976, could not have known what sad fate awaited it.
